Culture & Context in Riverside Park.

Embedding creative and cultural activity into future regeneration work.

Riverside Park runs alongside the Tyne River from the Gateshead Quays in the east to the Dunston Staithes. Despite a rich natural, industrial and artistic heritage, areas of the park had fallen into disuse and disrepair.

This project brought together a regional network of creative practitioners around a tangible, co-designed ‘pathway’ for the future development of Riverside Park and the Derwent Tyne Corridor.

‘Walking together’ through the park whilst engaging with a shared WhatsApp group encouraged participants to use the interactive capabilities of the platform in responding to questions and prompt messages about their immediate experiences. These observations were fleshed out in a collaborative workshop supported by First Saturdays at the Shipley Gallery.

Overall, the project provided an opportunity to identify sustainable and cohesive improvements to the park alongside wider interconnected opportunities for community cohesion and wellbeing.
